An Enterprise initiated by Rotary Clubs of Upper Eden and Appleby

A legacy of the Ice Cream Van overland trip to Mali back in 2007, is that any vehicle following the trail-blazing route on the Bamako Run has to be donated to Malian Rotary for specific use in building the Eden Clinic in the remote Dinfara Village.

In recent years the local troubles and conflicts has made the run too dangerous to contemplate so construction work ceased due to the lack of funds. However in January 2020 several brave souls took up the challenge and completed the tortuous route to Mali with 8 vehicles being subsequently donated to Rotary. These were sold at auction making the tidy sum of 4,300,000 fcfa which equates to about £6000 and allowing construction work to re-start in March 2020.

The pictures below are a timeline of the construction of the 3rd building in 2020. The second building was completed some time back and serves as the maternity ward and can be seen being fitted with a solar system so that it can become a fully functional unit. The dispensary in Ward 1 is the Out Patients Unit, which is fully functional. The target is to complete an additional 4th laboratory building and then call upon the Government to take over operation of the clinic and for it to serve as a referral centre to the surrounding villages.
